Chris took this photo in San Francisco. He calls it small acts of civil disobedience.
On October 18th, 2016, I wrote my last blog post that I called “Hiatus.” I called it Hiatus because I didn’t want to think that I would quit blogging and never come back again. Blogging the stories of my life had been a comfort and joy to me, something I could call my very own in a life that didn’t always seem like it had much to do with me.
I quit blogging because I was embarking on the biggest project of my life — besides carrying, delivering, and raising triplets plus one. I co-wrote, edited, and self-published a book called Multiples Illuminated: Stories and Advice From Parents of Twins, Triplets and More, available on Amazon. I had never done anything like this before, so I spent months scouring boring books like Dan Poynter’s Self-Publishing Manuals and subscribing to newsletters like 52 Ways To Sell More Books. It was information overload, totally boring shit for the general public, but I loved every second of it. What is better than making your dreams come true? And writing and publishing my own book was a dream come true. I was also finding a lot of personal satisfaction in publishing my word babies on other bigger sites like Scary Mommy, Huffington Post, and Cosmopolitan.
With the turn of the astrological clock to a new year, I have not been writing as much as I want to. As a writer, not writing makes me feel empty. It makes me feel sad. I learned that by quitting my blog over a year ago, there was nothing to tie me to a regular writing schedule. I spent a lot of time thinking about why I haven’t been writing as much lately, and this is what I came up with: 1. We spent the past year remodeling our house, which was so much fun but took up a huge amount of time. 2. The election process and results wiped me out emotionally. I was uninspired.
I have invested in my writing by having a new website designed, and I have committed to start blogging again. This time, I will try not to put pressure on myself to get something amazing out there to the world on a regular basis. I will write stories and publish them on my website when I have time and inspiration. I sure hope you will follow along and listen to the stories I want to tell.
I am currently working on two book projects that I hope to have complete in 2017. Follow along as I share stories of my writing process, raising kids in the 21st century, with a sprinkle of civil disobedience. I have some surprises in the form of life changes in the works.
Please browse around my new website and check out my books and some of the essays I wrote for publications. Share any feedback, positive or negative, about my new website in the comments.
So glad to be back!
P.S. – if you don’t want to get my new blog posts, you may unsubscribe and I will still like you.
Until next time, the mothership is signing off.
I heard from Jordan (who heard from Ava) about your lie changes! Very exciting – but more for you than for the rest of us here. Thanks in part to your inspiration, I have my Advanced American Lit juniors reading East of Eden for their last book of the year. I love it all over again. Yay for your new website and to more of you in my in-box!
