The Yankees finally get the type of big swing they’ve been looking for … and still they come away with serious regrets.
Austin Wells’ fly ball to center field hit off the wall. At second base, Anthony Volpe read the ball poorly, indecisive on whether to tag or take off. By the time the ball hit the ground, Volpe was headed back toward second. Once he realized the ball was down, he only reached third. Wells nearly caught him at second base and may have had a triple on the play if not for Volpe occupying the basepath.
Volpe scored on the Alex Verdugo grounder to first, but the Yankees probably should have had two runs that inning.
The amount of basic mistakes from New York this series has been unreal.
