French President Emmanuel Macron is considering declaring a state of emergency on the Pacific archipelago of New Caledonia, his office said Wednesday, after a police officer and three other people were killed in riots.

The violence, the worst in decades, is the latest flash point in long-running tensions over France’s role in New Caledonia, a French overseas territory located hundreds of miles off Australia’s eastern coast.
